What is Organic Compost and how
is it produced?
Organic compost is the product resulting from the controlled biological
decomposition of organic material, which has been sanitized through
the generation of heat and stabilized so that it is beneficial to
plant growth. True organic compost is not peat-based.
Compost is produced through the activity of aerobic (oxygen requiring)
micro organisms. These microbes require oxygen, moisture, and food
in order to grow and multiply. When these resources are maintained
at the optimum levels, the natural decomposition process is generally
accelerated. The microbes generate heat, water vapour, and carbon
dioxide as they transform raw materials into a stable soil conditioner.
Why use Organic Compost?
Using organic compost provides many benefits and is the only product
that can improve your soil physically, chemically and biologically.
Organic compost is an environmentally friendly product, and is an
annually renewable resource. Organic Compost can:
• Improve soil structure • Reduce soil compaction
• Provide micro and macro nutrients • Increase
water infiltration and water holding capacity • Increase
soil aeration • Reduction of soil erosion and nutrient
leaching • Improvement of microbial activity of soil
• May provide suppression of soil born diseases How
do I use compost? New Turf Areas:
Apply a 2.5 – 5.0 cm layer of compost to the soil and incorporate
it to a depth of 15-20cm, apply seed, then rake and water.
Turf Maintenance:
Apply a 1cm layer of compost to the turf, then rake and water. Add
seed prior to raking, if necessary. For best results, core aerate
turf area before applying compost.
Flower beds:
Apply a 2.5 – 5.0 cm layer of compost to the soil and incorporate
it to a 15- 20 cm depth. Plant flowers, shrubs, or seedlings then
water.
Trees and Shrubs:
Dig a hole 2/3 depth of the root ball and at least twice as wide.
Mix 1 part compost with 2 parts of soil from hole. Place the tree
or shrub in the hole and apply amended soil around the root ball.
Firm up the soil and water.
Mulching:
Spread a 5 – 7.5 cm layer around trees, shrubs and flowers.
